Hydrogenation is an extremely important process for producing clean fuels, and most of the catalysts used in hydrogenation processes use transition metal oxides such as Co, Mo, Ni, and W as active components of the catalysts. To enhance the hydrogenation activity of the catalyst, it is necessary to use a sulfurization agent to sulfurize the hydrogenation catalyst, so that the active components in the form of oxides in the catalyst can be transformed into a sulfurized state.
The commonly used vulcanizing agents in industry are dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) with less than ideal safety and environmental indicators, and SZ-54 produced by Lubrizol in the United States. Currently, the pre vulcanizing agents used usually have problems such as high toxicity, unpleasant odor, low safety, and high price. This has brought enormous pressure to the hydrogenation industry, making it difficult to cope with increasingly fierce market competition and energy-saving and environmental protection requirements.
Sinopec (Dalian) Petrochemical Research Institute Co., Ltd. (FRIPP, abbreviated as "Dalian Institute") began the research and development of safe and environmentally friendly sulfurizing agents for hydrogenation catalysts in 2015 in response to market demand. They have successfully developed an organic polysulfide type sulfurizing agent FSA-55 with independent intellectual property rights. This sulfurizing agent has outstanding advantages of high safety, environmental friendliness, and operator friendliness, and its main technical indicators are equivalent to the imported product SZ54, The safety and environmental protection indicators are significantly better than the general product DMDS, and are widely used in the wet pre vulcanization and wet sulfur replenishment processes of hydrogenation catalysts in the refining industry, as well as in the field of ethylene coke suppressants, demonstrating more safe and environmentally friendly technical advantages.
In June 2021, through technical appraisal organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Sinopec, FSA-55 vulcanizing agent has significant intrinsic safety characteristics and can replace vulcanizing agents such as DMDS.
